The fourth TEDxStPeterPort will take place on 5 May 2017 at the St Pierre Park Hotel.

This year we will be asking how business and the community can contribute to the Guernsey government’s Future Guernsey plan and help to turn that vision into a reality.

The event comprises twenty talks, with fifteen live speakers, and five recorded TED talks including; creating industries from scratch, the future of money, community kitchens and putting Guernsey on the map.

TEDxStPeterPort will inspire, educate and spark ideas around Future Guernsey’s four themes:

Our economy
Our quality of life
Our community
Our place in the world

Topics include:

Renewable Energy for Islands

Justin Locke is the Director of the Islands Energy Program at Rocky Mountain InstituteCarbon War Room and is based in Washington, DC.

He is experienced in helping islands transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and the implications this has for its industry and economy. Like other small islands, Guernsey could become an early adopter of this approach.

Social Prescribing

Presented by Chris Dayson, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University.

Social prescribing is a means of enabling GPs, nurses and other primary care professionals to refer patients to a range of local, non-clinical services to improve health and social outcomes.

Arts for Impact

Bringing alive the concept of social prescribing, Tyler Edmonds from Guernsey’s School of Popular Music will show how learning music can have a positive influence on individuals and the community within which we live.

Creative Thinking with a Purpose

Chrissy Levett founded Creative Conscience to encourage and reward ‘creative thinking with a purpose’.

She will talk about how innovation, design and creative thinking are useful tools for social change.

Local Prison Population

David Matthews, the governor of Guernsey’s prison, will share an insight into the population of Les Nicolles and how the prison population has been reduced from 130 to 80 inmates in the last five years.

David will talk about the next fifty years and what might happen if prison walls become obsolete.

Support for Disabled Community

Gary Evans set up Demand to use his commercial and engineering expertise to create products with a real purpose.

His company manufactures bespoke equipment to help people with disabilities.

He will show how the making community has a role in improving our quality of life.

Community Kitchens

Made in Hackney is the UK’s first 100% plant-based eco-community kitchen where people can learn how to grow food, cook healthy dishes and come together to cook in bulk.

Sarah Bentley will bring alive how this concept could work in Guernsey.

Time Banking

The concept of exchanging time and expertise has extensive applications for business, charity and community.

Sarah Bird is the CEO of Timebanking UK.

Sarah will show us how we can set up a time bank exchange network locally.
