June 13th, 2013 by Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards

The winners of the Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards will be presented with their prizes by Deputy Bailiff Richard McMahon on Thursday 13 June 2013.

After a successful judging day on 4 June 2013, each winner will be given a cheque from Insurance Corporation to fund their endeavours.

The event, which is in its 23 rd year, is staged to fund projects designed to protect the island’s green spaces and natural habitats.

The winner of the main award will win £2,000 to help fund their projects while the winning school will be awarded £1,000.

A special prize has also been added to the event, which will be announced at the presentation.

“We always look forward to this evening as it gives us a chance to collectively thank all of the entrants and to look back at all of the excellent projects and plans that we have judged,” Peter Walpole, Competition founder and chairman of Insurance Corporation, said.

“We have seen a wide variety of entries this year, and everyone has evidently worked hard.”

“It was difficult to come to a decision regarding the winners as everyone is clearly passionate about what they have entered,” he said.

Last year, a tree-planting project in local schools won the award for 2012 and was organised by The Guernsey Society of the Men of the Trees.

The Little Tree Project focused on tree planting and habitat creation to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

In a closely contested competition last year, the top school was La Houguette Primary who last won in 1998.

The school won £1,000 over three years to further develop their conservation garden and build a raised walkway over the wet meadow to provide a viewing platform for the children.

Each school that has entered the competition this year will also receive a bird box and food courtesy of Earlswood Nursery Garden Centre.

The presentation event will take place on Thursday 13 June 2013 at Les Cotils starting at 4.30 pm for all of the judges, entrants and those involved with the awards.
