Guernsey Gas and Kosangas (Guernsey) will increase their tariffs by 3% from 23 January 2013 as a result of global increases in Natural Gas and LPG prices.

There is, however, no increase in the standing charge.

“The decision to increase tariffs has been taken reluctantly but is one that has been forced upon us as a result of further global increases in wholesale energy prices,” said commercial director John Davies.

This gas price increase compares with other energy sources, which are trending upwards. Brent crude oil prices in August 2011 were about $110 per barrel, and in April 2012 $120 per barrel.  As a consequence local heating oil prices have increased by about 12.3 % since August 2011.

Guernsey Electricity has also seen a sharp rise in price. The Guernsey Electricity tariff increased by 17% in 2009, followed by an increase of 8.5% in 2010, an increase of 9% in 2011, and an increase of 11.5% in 2012.

Propane prices are forecast to stay at high levels for the foreseeable future,” Mr. Davies said.

“Guernsey Gas and Kosangas (Guernsey) will continue to review feedstock prices throughout the coming months to ensure all tariffs remain reflective of market wholesale prices.”

“Both downward and upward movements are possible as the market forecasts do not always prove accurate. We remain committed to ensuring tariffs represent good value in relation to the price of the wholesale product and our efficiency run utility business operating in Guernsey,” he said.

Guernsey Gas and Kosangas (Guernsey) encourage all customers to ensure their gas appliances; systems and controls are operating correctly in order to save energy.
