KPMG’s ‘Make a Difference Day’ in Guernsey in its seventh year

August 14th, 2012 by KPMG

Staff from KPMG in the Channel Islands’ Guernsey office will take time away from their desks to ‘make a difference’ in the local community in August and September 2012.

As part of the firm’s annual ‘Make a Difference Day’ initiative – now in its seventh year – employees will work on a variety of community projects.

One of KPMG’s global values is its commitment to the local communities in which it operates.

Staff are asked to nominate projects that are of interest or personal significance to them and most of the volunteers spend one day out of the office working on one of these chosen activities.

This year’s Guernsey projects are: helping the States of Guernsey Culture & Leisure department with the long term regeneration project at Château des Marais (the Ivy Castle), La Guet, GSPCA, La Société Guernesiaise, The North Show clear-up, Guernsey Voluntary Service’s Jubilee Day Centre for the Elderly and Festung Guernsey.

Tony Mancini, Executive Director of KPMG in the Channel Islands, who is responsible for the firm’s corporate citizenship programme in Guernsey, said “everyone in the firm is looking forward to taking part in this year’s projects.”

“We have a diverse mix of projects such as environmental causes, animal aid, assisting the elderly and helping to preserve the island’s heritage, which reflects the varying interests of our people.”

“In past years, we have always surprised ourselves at just how much we can get done when we pool our efforts and this year should be no different.”

“By dedicating just one working day of their time our staff can really see the positive effect which is extremely rewarding and the key driver behind our ‘Make a Difference Day’ programme. We have already sent an advance party at short notice to the GSPCA to paint rabbit hutches,” he said.

As well as dedicating time in the summer to these chosen projects, KPMG in the Channel Islands has a full corporate citizenship programme supporting its local community in many ways, and actively encourages employees to get involved throughout the year.

KPMG’s “Make a Difference Day” project schedule

On 13 or 14 August 2012, depending on the weather, a team will work with the States of Guernsey Department of Culture and Leisure on the regeneration of Château des Marais (Ivy Castle). They will lay a path, continue to upgrade the area, and undertake further clearing work around the walls to enable masonry repairs.

On 17 August 2012, at La Guet, Cobo, a small group will clear and tidy some of the German fortifications and do weeding around the walls.

On 20 August 2012 staff will work with the ‘Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (GSPCA) at their centre. Two members of staff have volunteered to run in the mascot race on the St Peter Port seafront on Sunday, 7 September.

On 24 August 2012, KPMG staff will work at The North Show. By popular demand, KPMG staff will return to help with the de-rig and clearance of Saumarez Park show ground after the North Show.

Several KPMG volunteers will work with the Guernsey Voluntary Service at their Jubilee Day Centre for the Elderly. Several KPMG staff have covered regular GVS volunteers for holiday periods throughout July and August for the last five years.

On 24 August 2012 a team will work with Festung Guernsey to clear and refurbish one of their sites.

In September a team will work with La Société Guernesiaise on a conservation project.
