June 8th, 2012 by Floral Guernsey

Floral Guernsey’s Guernsey in Bloom summer festival fortnight will include a visit from renowned horticulturalist Monty Don in an evening jointly hosted with the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG).

Mr Don is well known for presenting Gardener’s World as well as Channel 4’s Real Gardens and Lost Gardens.

Monty Don will give a talk 'A year in my garden' on 14 July 2012 at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts, St Peter Port (click image to expand - image courtesy of Floral Guernsey)

He has published several books including The Sensuous Garden, Urban Jungle and Gardening at Longmeadow.

Guernsey in Bloom will take place from 30 June to 15 July 2012 thanks to on-going sponsorship from Resolution Limited, Guernsey’s first FTSE 100 company.

The fortnight takes place after the community competition judging. Guided walks will be given around each parish along the award winning judging routes.

RHS recommended events will also take place, aimed at showcasing the floral efforts of the island.

The fortnight will conclude with an evening talk given by Mr Don on 14 July 2012 at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts.

The evening will celebrate the NCCPG’s 25th anniversary and Floral Guernsey’s 20th anniversary and will be jointly hosted by both organisations.

In the anniversary talk, ‘A year in my garden’, Monty Don will discuss his garden at Longmeadow, the results he has achieved, his influences, how he implements them, and how the garden changes through the seasons.

Mr Don will also be presenting a ‘Sow and Grow’ gardening workshop for local children at Le Friquet Garden Centre on Saturday 14 July 2012.

Chairman of Floral Guernsey, Tony Spruce, is impressed with the calibre of speakers this year.

“After the success of our Spring Festival Week with celebrity guests Diarmuid Gavin and Joy Larkcom, it’s a real coup to be bringing Monty Don to speak at Guernsey in Bloom.

This event would not be possible without the NCCPG and the sponsorship from Resolution which also allows us to offer subsidised ticket prices for events,” he said.

Fergus Dunlop, Director of Resolution Limited, loves how the parish projects come together.

“Of course, we have nature on our side here in Guernsey. But it makes a big difference how parish teams prepare for the judges. Resolution is proud to be involved with a group of volunteers who have such a positive impact on the look and feel of the island,” Mr. Dunlop said.

A full programme will be available from the Guernsey Information centre from 15 June 2012.

Tickets for the Monty Don talk will be available from Friday 8 June 2012 at a cost of £15 or £12 for NCCPG members from any of the Guernsey Tickets outlets, or by contacting the Princess Royal Centre Performing Arts box office on 01481 749999.
