Local charities have until 21 October 2011 to enter the inaugural Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 and apply for a share of £25,000.

Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 is open to registered charities in the Bailiwick of Guernsey that are looking for a grant to fund a local project or initiative that will make a real difference to local people in a variety of ways. Funding cannot be provided for overseas projects.

Paul Woodland, Head of Local Markets at Barclays Wealth in Guernsey said ‘We have received overwhelming interest in the inaugural Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 which is fantastic as there are so many worthwhile projects in the island. Barclays Wealth has successfully run a similar scheme in Jersey, which is now in its fifth year, and I am proud that we are able to extend support to unsung heroes here. I would urge charities to send their applications in as soon as possible.’

In Guernsey Barclays Wealth has previously provided funding to charitable organisations on an ad-hoc basis, however the Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 initiative has been launched to raise awareness of available funding and reach as many charities as possible. Grants will be awarded for both large and small projects in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, ranging from a few hundred pounds to thousands of pounds.

The scheme in Jersey has provided funds to support a variety of projects, from kitting out a new sensory room at a special needs school, supporting an arts initiative organised by the Jersey Alzheimer’s Association and funding an after school homework club for primary school children. Last year the awards in Jersey helped 10 charities to continue or launch new initiatives.

All entries will be reviewed by Barclays Wealth’s Community Team, from which the shortlist will be determined. Judges Paul Woodland and Sharon Baudains of Barclays Wealth Intermediaries and Wealth International, Guernsey Press deputy editor Shaun Green, Director of Barclays Wealth Advisory Julia Church and a representative from Vista Hotels Group will then review the shortlisted entries. The closing date for entries is Friday 21 October.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Entries from any charity, which has registered representation in Guernsey
  • Applications for any amount up to £25,000
  • Projects on which Barclays Wealth staff may be able to work in partnership with the charity to deliver a specific need in the community

The winners will be announced at the Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 presentation evening on Thursday 17 November at The Venue, St Peter Port.

Barclays Wealth in Jersey will, for another year award £25,000 to be shared among charities there and with the same being given in Guernsey – a total of £50,000 will be donated across the Channel Islands.

As Barclays Wealth Champion Charities 2011 aims to provide funding for local projects grants are not available for medical research, salaries or utility costs, educational institutions or the arts (unless the donation provides direct support to a disadvantaged group), third-party giving organisations or to contribute towards school, community groups or charity days out.

Entry forms are available from Barclays in the High Street, St Peter Port and Barclays Wealth, Le Marchant House, Le Truchot, St Peter Port or by email from sharon.baudains @
