The Sigma Group’s tree-planting scheme – local businessesʼ office supplies will be turned into planted trees

December 1st, 2010 by The Sigma Group

As the largest supplier of stationery across the Channel Islands, Sigma Stationary is a community focused business and wishes to play an active role in Guernsey. Sigma is keen to show this local support through launching a Guernsey tree-planting scheme.

To do this, Sigma is targeting many local businesses who have a corporate commitment to being green and to raising awareness of the importance of looking after the environment. The unique campaign, working in conjunction with such local businesses, means Sigma will give back to the community the form of a whole wood.

Every time a business spends £25 or more on stationery and office supplies from Sigma Stationery, a tree point is awarded.

For every sixteen points, Sigma will plant a tree in Guernsey, which will go towards creating the Sigma Wood. The scheme has received a keen response already, with a steady stream of tree points being given out already, but more are needed.

Through the local ʻGuernsey Society of the Men of the Treesʼ charity, the Sigma Wood will be created in Guernsey. Mixed deciduous, broadleaf trees including English Oak, Ash, Lime and Silver Birch will be planted. The aim is to plant up to five hundred trees, based on quantities of stationery bought between now and February 2011.

Chris Stuart, Senior Manager at Sigma Stationery commented: “Our stationery can help give Guernsey the Sigma Wood. Weʼre helping to support the Guernsey Society of the Men of The Trees receive much-needed funds to plant more trees, and to make a difference to our island being a greener place.”

Managing Director, Robert Sillars adds “The Sigma Wood scheme is an important way for people to turn paper (and other stationery) back into trees. Every time your company orders stationery, it could be something that benefits the wider community and future generations benefits, in the form of new trees planted”.

Andrew McCutcheon, Secretary for Men of the Trees said “The Men of the Trees is delighted to receive the support of the business community. By effectively turning sales of stationery into planted trees there is enormous potential for delivering great benefits for Guernsey in terms of wildlife, shelter and the landscape to name but three”.

People can also back the scheme by becoming a ʻFriend of Sigma Woodʼ – the supporters group. Current customers have been automatically been awarded a “Friend of Sigma Wood” status. Friends of Sigma Wood will also run initiatives to help educate both school children and the population at large of the benefits of planting trees.

The location of the planted trees will be announced at the end of the campaign, by 1 March 2011.
