Recycling is not enough – industry needs to close the product lifecycle loop to be sustainable

December 8th, 2010 by Ellen MacArthur Foundation

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation raises awareness of the need to develop a Circular Economy to create a sustainable civilisation that generates no waste.

She visits Interface Flor, which makes flooring, to see how the company is developing a closed-loop system.  Following the cradle to cradle philosophy, when the flooring needs replacing, it can re-enter the manufacturing process to make new products.

The company is becoming a service company.  It will rent flooring to its customers, maintain and repair it, and reprocess it when it needs to be refurbished.
