Oxford University Society Guernsey branch host lecture on earthquakes on 2 May 2012 at St James

Dr Richard Walker from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford will provide an illustrated lecture at St James Concert & Assembly Hall beginning at 6:00 pm on Wednesday 2 May 2012 addressing the challenges of earthquakes in urban society.

This public lecture costs £10 per person but is free for students.

Admission is by ticket, which may be obtained from Steven Jones (c/o BWCI Group, PO Box 68, Albert House, South Esplanade, St Peter Port, Guernsey, GY1 3BY) or the Box Office at St James or online.

Run in RG Falla quarter marathon on 20 May to Help a Guernsey Child

This year’s RG Falla Quarter Marathon will raise funds for Help a Guernsey Child.

Now in its eleveth year, the sponsorship money from those taking part in the annual charity run will go to assist disadvantaged local children, young people and youth organisations.

Help A Guernsey Child also supports some other local charities that need additional funding.

ADHD expert to give free Guernsey workshops on 27 & 28 April 2012

The Guernsey Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Support Group has organised for a leading specialist to visit Guernsey for a series of free workshops and interactive sessions with families, clinical practitioners and support health services, teachers and education department, the general public and anyone else interested in attending.

Lorrine Marer is an experienced behavioural specialist who has been working in the ADHD field in the UK and US for more than a decade. She has two sons, now adults, who were diagnosed with ADHD and Dyspraxia as children. Continue reading

Guernsey business seminar on supported employment on 17 April

The Guernsey Chamber of Commerce hosts an early morning seminar on ‘Disability in the workplace – how your business can benefit from supported employment’ in La Seigneurie Suite, St Pierre Park Hotel, St Peter Port on 17 April 2012.  The seminar starts promptly at 8 am. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available.

Coast Media has sponsored the seminar, which will address disability in the workplace.

Interwork Services, a specialist recruitment service within the States of Guernsey Health & Social Services Department, will discuss the work they do to help companies recruit and retain skilled disabled employees.

Specsavers will share their experience of employing a disabled Job Seeker through Interwork Services.

Delicious food at first weekly Fresh Friday Market in St Peter Port

Guernsey food sellers participated in the first Fresh Friday food market held in Market Square, St Peter Port from early morning to mid-afternoon on 13 April 2012.

The new market will be a weekly affair although not all food sellers are able to participate in the market every week.

The market had peaks of activity at 11 am and again around lunchtime.  There was live music as people stood or sat on benches in the sunshine eating delicious food.

Victoria McKenzie cupcakes at Cake sold very quickly.  By midday she had very few left. They were made with Castel free range eggs and Guernsey butter. Continue reading

There will be lots of activities and events for children and parents.

Guernsey Renewable Energy Team Open day at Beau Sejour on 3 April

Guernsey’s Commerce and Employment Department’s Renewable Energy Team (RET) is to hold an open day so that the public can learn more about the potential for macro marine renewable energy in Guernsey.

Members of RET will be available in the lobby of Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, St Peter Port between 1200 and 1430 and from 1600 to 1830 on Tuesday 3 April 2012 to meet the public and answer questions about RET’s work.

RET and the States of Guernsey Commerce & Employment Department are responsible for progressing macro marine renewable (offshore wind, wave and tidal energy) in Guernsey’s waters and are looking to get all legal and commercial processes ready so that Guernsey can take advantage of this renewable energy at the right time. On 5 April 2012 The Lihou Charitable Trust holds its Easter egg hunt in and around the grounds of Lihou House.

On 5 April, please register at 11 am for an 11.30 am start. The cost is £3.50 per child or £3.00 for ‘Friends of Lihou’.

You may join ‘Friends of Lihou‘ on the day.

Food (hot dogs, biscuits) and drinks (tea, coffee, soft drinks) will be available.

La Grande Mare Hotel Golf & Country Club Charity Golf Day takes place on 20 April 2012 to raise funds for Les Bourgs Hospice and Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG).

La Grande Mare Golf & Country Club and the Vermeulen Family will sponsor and manage this Charity Golf Day.

All of the costs associated with the day will be covered by the sponsors which means that all the money raised will be donated to the two charities – which happen to be the charities selected as the Captain’s Charities by the Clubs Captains for 2012. Continue reading
