Guernsey Bicycle Group electric bike demonstration a great success

The Guernsey Bicycle Group (GBG) organised a very successful demonstration of electric bikes on Smith Street in the heart of St Peter Port from midday to 2 pm on Friday 19 June 2015.

Adventure Cycles from St Martin and Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop on Les Banques provided a range of electric bicycles for members of the public to test ride up and down an area of Smith street delineated by traffic cones.

Dan Twaite of Adventure Cycles and Ian Brown of Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop set-up the electric bikes to suit each rider’s requirements altering the seat height and showing how to alter the amount of electric assistance the bike could provide.

They set-up a table at the foot of Smith Street and provided information on each electric bicycle model available.

GBG chose the pedestrianised Smith Street because of its footfall, and because of the steepness of the street to demonstrate how effortless it is to ride up a hill on an electric bike.

With an electric bike in ‘full-assist’ mode, it can carry a passenger up a hill as long as the pedals are turned slowly. The electric bike comes to a gentle stop when the passenger stops pedalling.

Participants with knee injuries found they could ride an electric bike without knee pain even up a steep hill.

Some members of the public who tested an electric bike believed it would give them the opportunity to exercise more.

One person had a stationary bicycle at home but hadn’t put it to much use and thought he would be more motivated to cycle if he got out and about on an electric bike.

Some participants remarked that an electric bike would be useful for popping out quickly to the shops.

All participants, regardless of their age and ability, found that using an electric bike was easy and great fun.

Several people tested different models and went up and down Smith Street several times and on every occasion they reached the top of the hill they said the ride had been fun.

Workers on their lunch break test rode electric bikes as well as tourists and business visitors to Guernsey.

The electric bike demonstration event was filmed by Channel ITV and by BBC Guernsey.
