Reducing waste will be a key theme at the Homelife Show 2013 at the Beau Sejour Leisure Centre from Friday 8 November to Sunday 10 November 2013 with extra recycling facilities for exhibitors and visitors.

States of Guernsey Public Services’ staff will be on hand with information and advice.

The Department’s Reduce Reuse Recycle stand will feature money-saving kitchen tips, space saving ideas for recycling storage and other practical advice and demonstrations.

It will also showcase examples of some unwanted household items that have been given a new lease of life and offering kitchen gadgets to keep food fresher for longer.

Visitors will also be able to take part in research and have an opportunity to win a Kindle Fire or a smoothie maker.

In addition to its stand the Public Services Department has arranged recycling throughout the show itself.

There will be bins for plastic bottles and drink cans around Beau Sejour as well as facilities for exhibitors to recycle cardboard, paper and polythene which are sponsored by Mayside Recycling.

Public Services is arranging to produce compost from bins full of fruit peel and other green material that will be produced at the show.

Recycling Officer Tina Norman-Ross said events like this can generate a lot of packaging and other disposable materials.

It was therefore important to encourage exhibitors to get involved with reducing waste and recycling as much as possible.

“We have been working with the organisers to encourage everyone to reduce the amount of waste they produce and to ensure as much as possible of what is produced gets recycled. We will also have a big presence at the show itself and it will be great opportunity to talk to lots of islanders,” she said.
