Andy Priaulx visits BMW’s Leipzig plant where the electric i3 & plug-in hybrid i8 sports care are made

Guernsey’s Andy Priaulx with other BMW racing drivers stopped by the BMW Plant in Leipzig, Germany on 12 September 2013.

After the drivers signed autographs for BMW employees, they had a guided tour of the production facilities and the new assembly line for the fully-electric BMW i3 and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, which have a strong focus on sustainability.

BMW driver Augusto Farfus from Brazil said “it was really fascinating to get an insight into the technology of the future.”

“BMW is setting new benchmarks with these visionary cars. Sooner or later, this technology will undoubtedly make its way into motorsport,” he said.

Andy Priaulx and his fellow racing drivers visited the plant’s test site where they drove BMW’s i8, which has the same consumption and emission values as a compact car.

Racing driver Timo Glock from Germany said “it was exciting and interesting to drive this car. I was very impressed by the performance and acceleration.”

“The electric and combustion engines work together perfectly,” he said.
