The Eleanor Foundation‘s appeal for disused Guernsey bikes for Africa has got off to a good start with 173 bicycles donated during the weekend of 23 and 24 February 2013, which is enough to fill the first shipping container.

The Eleanor Foundation hopes to send two containers, with about 300 donated bikes, to Re~cycle in Colchester where the bikes will be serviced and sorted before shipment to Africa where they will make life easier for many families.

Fifteen bicycles were collected from the States of Guernsey Public Services Department Longue Hougue Recycling facility and another 45 bicycles came from The Tumaini Fund, which works to improve the lives of AIDS orphans in the Kagera region of Tanzania.

Representatives from The Eleanor Foundation will be at Unit 3, Braye Road Industrial Estate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 March 2013, to accept more disused bicycles for their ‘bikes for Africa’ initiative.

If you are unable to deliver your bicycles at this time, bicycles can be taken on weekdays during opening hours to the Longue Hougue Recycling facility, where they will be stored until such time as they can be assembled with the other bicycles for shipment to Re~cycle in Colchester.
