Insurance Corporation’s Guernsey Conservation Awards competition entry deadline 28 May 2013

Environmentally friendly gardeners have the chance of winning £2,000 with the launch of the 2013 Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards.

The event, in its 24th year, is open to any private Bailiwick of Guernsey individual, club, company, organisation and any Guernsey educational institution.

The entry deadline for Guernsey residents is Tuesday 28 May 2013 with judging on 4 June and the presentation of awards on 13 June 2013.

The top prize last year was won by the Little Trees Project, which was organised by The Guernsey Society of the Men of the Trees.

It focused on tree planting and habitat creation to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The winners walked away with the prestigious trophy and a cheque for £2,000 to help fund their project.

Clive & Geraldine Silk were also Highly Recommended for their conservation garden as was Fiona Pollock whose organic vegetable growing business impressed the judges. They both won £250.

“We had a real mix of entries in our competition last year” said Peter Walpole, Insurance Corporation chairman.”

“These are very beautiful islands with fragile eco-systems and playing our part in helping to protect these valuable spaces for future generations is important to us. We look forward to seeing what 2013 entrants will have to offer,” he said.

La Houguette won the schools section and took away £1,000 over three years, to further develop their conservation garden and build a raised walkway over the wet meadow to provide a viewing platform for the children.

The entries will be visited on Tuesday 4 June 2013 and judged by a panel of experts including members of The National Trust of Guernsey and La Société Guernesiaise.
