CLIC Sargent childen’s cancer charity to benefit from Market Square, St Peter Port ice skating

November 14th, 2012 by Saffery Champness

Saffery Champness has stepped in at the 11th hour to sponsor the ice skating rink in Market Square during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The festive attraction had been in jeopardy because of a shortfall in sponsorship.

Ice Skate Guernsey Project Manager James Evans said he was delighted by the development.

Saffery Champness will be joint main sponsor, with JT and Roebuck Trading, and is making the community gesture to mark its 35th anniversary in Guernsey.

CLIC Sargent, the charity that supports young children with cancer, will also be a beneficiary, as Saffery Champness has negotiated for a donation from every evening skating ticket sold to be made to its charity of choice.

Kelvin Hudson, Managing Director of Saffery Champness, said “when we heard that the ice rink may not go ahead, the directors agreed to support it by way of recognising the part Guernsey has played in the success of our business over the last 35 years.”

“We are especially pleased that Ice Skate Guernsey was willing to join us in partnering CLIC Sargent so that while people are skating and having fun they are making a difference to the life of a child or young person with cancer,” he said.

It is intended that the ice rink will operate from 10 December 2012 to 8 January 2013.

Mr Evans said “people were very disappointed at the prospect that ice skating wouldn’t happen this Christmas. I’ve received lots of messages of support. Friends of the Guernsey Christmas Ice Rink 2012 Facebook page, which has around 600 members, were even offering to go door-to-door fundraising.”

“It went right to the wire and we negotiated extra time with the site manager. I was overjoyed when I heard that Saffery Champness was on side.”

“I am also very grateful to JT, last year’s sponsor, for their loyalty to Ice Skate Guernsey and for standing by us during the last few weeks when the viability of the event was in the balance.”

In addition to the three main sponsors other support has come from Ogier, Principal Security, Access Scaffolding, Oracle Insurance Brokers, Orchard PR and Island FM.”

Tamara O’Brien, Deputy MD of JT in Guernsey, said “we are delighted to be able to join together with the other sponsors in supporting the return of the skate rink to Market Square once again this year.”

“We’re aware it has become an important and popular feature in Guernsey’s festive calendar which is why it is clearly great news that the organisers have now been able to secure enough joint sponsors and funds, alongside our continued commitment, to go ahead again this year, given the increased costs.”

“We are now looking forward to working with them to make sure it is again an enjoyable destination over Christmas and a real success for the whole community.”

Further details of how to purchase ice skating tickets will follow soon.
