The Hub was officially launched on Friday 7 September 2012 and will enable YPG to provide young people aged between 11 and 16 years old with a professional and sustainable resource that delivers advice, information and help, adhering to the highest standards of youth work and best practice.
YPG has commissioned the UK’s leading children’s charity Barnardo’s to provide an information, advice and listening service for young people in the island. Barnardo’s will recruit, train and manage youth workers at the centre and all funds raised will stay in Guernsey.
Jane St Pier, Young People Guernsey chair, said The Hub would cost about £100,000 per year to run, which includes operational costs and staff salaries.
“The donation from Bedell Cristin was completely unexpected and a wonderful surprise to receive on the day that we launched The Hub,” she said.
“The creation of The Hub is testimony to the compassion and generosity of Guernsey’s community and businesses like Bedell as they can see the far-reaching value in what YPG is doing.
“Now that we have opened The Hub and have a significant rent-free period we are directing all our funds towards securing funding to ensure this a valuable and viable resource for Guernsey’s young people in the long-term. Donations such as this one bring that viability that much closer and we are extremely grateful to the local law firm for its continued support.”
“‘We are pleased that the donation will go towards financing the operation and the highly qualified support staff at The Hub. The Hub will provide young people in the island with a safe place to seek professional advice and support for problems they are facing,” Mark Helyar, Bedell Cristin managing partner in Guernsey, said.
“Through our CSR activity at Bedell Cristin we believe in supporting all areas of the community in which we operate and as a result try to identify projects that will make a significant difference to individuals and organisations.”
Young People Guernsey was formed in 2010 to identify and respond to the needs of young people within the Bailiwick of Guernsey; primarily by raising funds to commission external professional agencies to provide services to young people, particularly those in need, and ultimately those at risk.
