The electric-motor powered car is coming of age with the production of a number of high performance, luxury electric sports cars, as well as a wide-range of family cars from international car manufacturers.

Croatian Mate Rimac established Rimac Automobili after he began to convert his old BMW to electric motor propulsion, and worked to continually make improvements to the converted car.

Using the experience gained by the conversion of the BMW to electric propulsion, Rimac Automobili has created a luxury electric-motor powered sports coupe called Concept One, which can accelerate to 100 kph in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 300 kph.

Concept One is powered by four electric motors producing a combined 1088 horsepower.

The lithium iron phosphate batteries store 91 kWh of energy, which gives the vehicle a cruising range of 600 kilometres.

Mate Rimac’s small Croatian firm has patented 24 innovations to produce the car. Nearly all the parts have been produced in Croatia.

One of the innovative features is the independent control of each wheel, which has its own motor, and its own inverter, and reduction gearbox.

The ‘All Wheel Torque Vectoring system‘ allows power adjustments to be made to each wheel independently many hundreds of times per second.
