Specialist cable repair engineers working alongside Channel Islands Electricity Grid engineers on board the Team Oman recovered the faulty section of the undersea cable that runs between Guernsey and Jersey.
Guernsey Electricity director Sally-Ann David said “working overnight and using a remotely operated vehicle, approximately half a kilometre of cable was raised from the seabed by the engineers. The faulty section was found where we expected it to be following the original survey vessel’s tests conducted at the beginning of July.”
Team Oman, the repair ship, and Maersk Puncher, her support boat, arrived in Guernsey waters last week and conducted a series of tests on the sea bed and tidal flows before undertaking the recovery of the faulty cable section.
The faulty section itself will be sent to laboratories in the UK for forensic examination to determine the cause of the fault. The results may take up to several months to be finalised.
“Engineers are now preparing to joint in the spare section of cable link however the Team Oman will return to Portland on 1 August to resupply the vessel, and avoid the forecasted adverse weather due to come in towards the end of the week” said Mrs Sally-Ann David.
