Guernsey Water will shortly be commencing the second phase of its project to refurbish manhole chambers in the Route de la Palloterie, Rue des Laurens and Route de Pleinmont. The project will run from 4 September to 8 October 2012.

The work will complete the project that began in February 2012, and will require the road to be closed as heavy concrete cover slabs are taken off and a new lining system is put in place.

This second phase of refurbishment will involve the rehabilitation of the remaining 13 manhole chambers leading up to the Creux Mahie wastewater facility.

Andrew Redhead, director of water services, said “these refurbishments are necessary because the condition of these manholes has deteriorated due to them being close to one of the major cesspit-sewage emptying points.”

“As the sewage from cesspits is not ‘fresh’, it creates a gas called hydrogen sulphide which attacks the structure of the manholes, causing them to collapse if they are not repaired in time. We apologise for any inconvenience that these essential works may cause.”

For information on the diversion that will be in place during the closure, please visit the Island Roadworks Information System (IRIS) or contact the States of Guernsey Environment Department’s Traffic and Transport Section on 243400.
