The Longue Hougue Recycling Facility will close for two weeks in June 2012 so that the States of Guernsey Public Services Department can improve and upgrade the site. It will close on 11 June and reopen on 25 June 2012.

Tina Norman-Ross, Public Services Recycling Officer, said “the site has to move a few hundred metres to allow building work to begin on the new slaughter house. It therefore has to close temporarily, so we are taking the opportunity to improve the layout of the site and introduce designated drop off areas, clearer signage and in general, much improved facilities”.

Despite being a temporary site, Public Services has also submitted plans to the Environment Department to erect a covered area. If approved, it will provide storage for reusable items which currently have to be left outside, such as wooden furniture and electrical items.

The site remains extremely popular and last year more than 62,000 vehicles visited the site and over 10,000 disclaimers were signed allowing visitors to take items away for reuse. As well as thousands of items reused by islanders, from bicycles to old flower pots, nearly 1000 tonnes of material was recycled via the Longue Hougue facility in 2011.

Deputy Paul Luxon, Public Services Minister, said “The improvements should make a big difference and will help to keep any items left at Longue Hougue, in a good reusable condition. Of course, any reused or recycled items reduces the amount of waste currently going to landfill and will help extend the life of the Mont Cuet landfill.”

Please visit the States of Guernsey Public Services Department recycling webpage for a full list of items that can be accepted at the Longue Hougue Recycling Facility.
