Guernsey Community Awards in 2012 will have new award category

June 2nd, 2012 by Guernsey Community Foundation

The Community Awards will be returning on Wednesday 7 November 2012 and will be boosted by the addition of a new award category.

The afternoon tea event, which was successfully launched last year by the Guernsey Community Foundation, is set to take place at St James and will include a new award for Organising Committee of the Year.

The Community Awards recognise and applaud the work of charities and voluntary organisations in the island.

The awards categories are: Charity of the Year, Outstanding Individual Achievement, Fundraising Team of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility, Overseas Award and the new award for Organising Committee of the Year.

Stuart Falla, Chair of the Guernsey Community Foundation, said that despite the success of the first event in 2011, the Foundation has since identified one particular area for improvement.

“The launch of the Community Awards last year was a huge success,” he said.

“We are very much looking forward to a repeat of that this year. The event had a great feel to it and it was humbling to hear about all of the fantastic work that is going on in Guernsey’s charity and voluntary sector, quite often under the radar.”

“We have since identified a gap in the awards categories where there is no acknowledgement for the many smaller committees and groups of volunteers who work so hard to arrange a whole variety of community events in the island throughout the year, and so we are pleased to announce the introduction of a new award for Organising Committee of the Year to plug that gap.”

The new award will be given to the organisers of an annual event or one-off project which has been particularly successful in engaging with the local community.

The committee need not be formally registered with the Income Tax Authority and should not, as its primary function, be engaged in fundraising for a specific charitable cause.

Planning and preparations for this year’s Community Awards are well underway.

More information about the event and the nominations process will be released in the coming months. You can keep up to date with all the news from the Guernsey Community Foundation team on our Facebook page.
