Wayaya is a Guernsey and Zambian Registered Charity. It is building a home for street children in Zambia.

  • One and a half million children in Zambia live on the streets
  • Over 71% of Zambia’s six million children live in extreme poverty and deprivation
  • Over 30% of all Zambian children under the age of 15 are orphans
  • By 2015 in the region of 20% of Zambia’s children will be orphaned by HIV/Aids

The majority of these children face a bleak future, without parents to care for them and with little, if any, assistance offered by the government.

Children, both girls and boys turn to the streets in search of a better life but the reality that confronts them can only be described as extremely grim.

Street life creates extreme vulnerability to violence, exploitative and hazardous labour, sex-work and trafficking.

Young girls in particular, are the first to be denied educational opportunities in favour of boys and are forced into early marriages with older men, which put them at higher risk of HIV infection.

Wayaya believes it is more practical to invest in structures for children living on the streets rather than simply donating clothing and foodstuffs for them.

Wayaya is the long standing dream of Glenda Namukonda who was born and raised in Zambia. She was lucky enough to be brought up with her family around her and receive a good education.

For many years, her one aim in life has been to build a home in Kitwe, for orphaned children taken from the streets and give them a loving caring Christian home.

The Charity has acquired the land and raised enough money to lay the foundations and commence the building.

However in order to complete this build, the fund requires continuous help and support to complete and run the project with a target completion time of end 2012.
