Guernsey charities have until 13 April to become this year’s Harbour Carnival fundraising beneficiary

Guernsey charities are invited to apply to be the main beneficiary for this year’s Harbour Carnival, which takes place on Friday 6 July 2012.

Paul Eaton, President of the Guernsey Round Table, which is behind the annual fundraiser, explained that Guernsey charities are being actively encouraged to apply to become the main beneficiary.

“Typically our members nominate a charity in partnership with the event sponsors, RBC Wealth Management. However, this year we are keen to hear from charities that would not only benefit from the funding but would offer their support on the night.”

“We would love to hear from local charities that use their funds exclusively for the benefit of Guernsey residents, offer support or services to the community at-large, and are willing to get involved with our organising team. We’re looking to partner with a charity that will be able to provide plenty of volunteers on both the lead up to the event, and on the night to help make the 2012 Harbour Carnival a big success,” he said.

Last year’s event raised a record £14,252 and introduced some new ideas, including a rubber duck race at the start of the evening.

The 2011 main beneficiary was Wigwam Support Group, a charity that provides support for Guernsey families of children who have special needs.

Wigwam used the Harbour Carnival funds to meet some of the costs of its hugely popular family weekend trip to Jersey.

“Wigwam couldn’t have been a better partner last year,” said Alan Pearce from the Guernsey Leadership Team at RBC Wealth Management.

“They brought with them lots of enthusiasm and plenty of volunteers on the night. There is no doubt that their support contributed towards last year’s bumper fundraising total.”

Mr Eaton said “we are now in the final stages of agreeing this year’s timetable and will be revealing new events very soon. In the meantime we are working closely with our sponsors, RBC Wealth Management, to ensure that this year’s Harbour Carnival attracts the crowds to the St Peter Port waterfront to raise as much money as possible.”

Applicants should write to Shaun Gourley, Guernsey Round Table vice president, at shaun @ shields.gg, stating their Association of Guernsey Charities membership number, the nature of their charity, how they would use the funding, and the resource they could provide to help with fundraising.

The closing date for funding applications is Friday 13 April 2012.
