The States of Guernsey has appointed former Guernsey Electricity Engineering Director Steve Morris as its Energy Policy Advisor.

Mr Morris, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the energy industry, now has the task of developing a range of initiatives that help meet the strategic requirements of the States’ Energy Resource Plan, which is one of four Island Resource Plans within the States Strategic Plan that enable the delivery of corporate objectives.

Deputy Carla McNulty Bauer, Chairman of the Energy Policy Group, said “the Policy Council and the Commerce and Employment Department are delighted to announce the appointment of an Energy Policy Advisor who will provide technical support to help ensure momentum is maintained in the important area of energy”.

The States approved the Energy Resource Plan on 9 February 2012. It aims to maintain the safety and security of affordable and sustainable supplies, use energy wisely, and reduce environmental impacts of energy consumption.

The States has previously lacked the resources to make substantial and timely progress in these areas, prompting the Commerce and Employment Department and the Policy Council to create the shared Energy Policy Advisor post, to develop specific actions to achieve the aims of the Energy Resource Plan.

Mr Morris’ extensive experience of the energy market includes having conducted numerous reviews of specific energy technologies.

Deputy McNulty Bauer said “Steve’s professional engineering background together with his working knowledge of a considerable range of renewable energy technologies will provide the Energy Policy Group with professional and robust advice on a range of energy issues, from small scale domestic installations to large scale infrastructure provision”.

“In addition to the benefits Steve will bring to the working of the Energy Policy Group, he will also be advising the Renewable Energy Team which will be putting in place the framework required to enable real progress to be made on harnessing marine renewable energy”.

Mr Morris takes up his new position within the States at the end of March 2012.
