Mondomundi held an event to raise awareness of the importance of buying Fairtrade chocolate and other products at its Traidcraft Big Brew evening on Monday 5 March 2012.

Traidcraft’s Big Brew campaign is a nationwide initiative that helps individuals, businesses and the community host events that highlight how Fairtrade brings hope to many thousands of poor producers across the globe.

Barbara Crowther, Fairtrade Foundation’s director of communications and policy, attended the event while visiting Mondomundi as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

In the spirit of a Big Brew tea party Mondomundi co-founders Phil and Heidi Soulsby and Ms Crowther presented a teapot made of Fairtrade chocolate and showed that a Fairtrade chocolate teapot is far from useless.

“Whoever coined the phrase ‘useful as a chocolate teapot’ didn’t count on the Fairtrade Foundation. If the 26.3 million households in Britain bought a 2 kg. teapot made of Fairtrade chocolate, it would put over £6.5 million into the pockets of the world’s poorest cocoa farmers,” said Mrs Soulsby.

Ms Crowther spoke from personal experience about the difference Fairtrade is making to the lives of producers in the developing world.

“Mondomundi’s Traidcraft Big Brew evening was a wonderful showcase of the best and most diverse range of Fairtrade products now available, from gifts and toys to store cupboard essentials. It was also a celebration of the entrepreneurial spirit of Fairtrade – defying the odds to even find a use for a chocolate teapot!” said Ms Crowther.

Mr Soulsby said “Guernsey has always had a high level of support for Fairtrade and it is great to see so much continued interest in it.”
