Guernsey students will soon have the option to study for a full-time business studies degree on island with the GTA University Centre and Bournemouth University.

The two year undergraduate BA (Hons) Business Studies degree is the first full-time degree course available in Guernsey and will be offered to local students from September 2012.

“This is a first for higher education in Guernsey. Working in partnership with Bournemouth University, we have developedan innovative curriculum which will be delivered in two rather than three years,” said Fiona Naftel, Chief Executive of the GTA University Centre.

“Whilst it is not the GTA’s intention to replace the opportunities offered to young people through full time study at a UK university, this on-island initiative provides an alternative or perhaps a second chance for those who cannot go, or choose not to go to university. From discussions with schools, employers and prospective students, we know that there is growing demand for an on-island pathway to achieving a degree,” she said.

Tina Watson, headteacher at the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre said “this new business studies degree is a welcome option for local students and is a great development for higher education in the island. For those high achieving students who don’t want to travel to the UK or who can’t afford to but want to continue with higher education, this is a great opportunity.”

The course will cover 16 modules including Introduction to Management, Legal Relationships, Working in an International Context and Consumer Behaviour and Market Research. Students will also be offered work placements either locally or in Bournemouth.

“The BA (Hons) Business Studies offers a degree focused on equipping students with the skills required to succeed in the modern business environment,” said Simon Le Tocq, Head of Programmes at the GTA University Centre.

“Bournemouth University have an excellent record for the employability of their students, enjoying one of the highest graduate employment rates in the country and we’re confident this record will continue for local students who complete the on island Business Studies degree.”

The new degree will offer time and cost savings for students unable to study off-island and students accepted onto the course will have the opportunity to apply for the same means tested funding from the States of Guernsey as students who attend universities in the UK.

The course will involve at least three days per week of face to face lectures and seminars and a fourth day is allocated for tutorials and individual study.

Interested students can apply directly to the GTA until August and interviews for places will be held on-island.

Representatives from the GTA University Centre and Bournemouth University will be attending the Higher Education Event at the Grammar School on 13 March 2012. A presentation on the new full-time degree will take place in room 75/76 at 2.30pm.

Further information on the programme is available from Simon Le Tocq at the GTA University Centre.
