Skipton Swimarathon raised £10,000 for Young People Guernsey charity

February 25th, 2012 by Skipton International Ltd

Young People Guernsey (YPG) was one of the beneficiaries of the October 2011 Skipton Swimarathon, which was organised by the Lions Club of Guernsey and Guernsey Round Table.

Young People Guernsey are using funds raised to commission Barnardo’s to provide a centre offering professional advice, support and counselling for Guernsey 11 to 16 year olds.

The 2011 Skipton Swimarathon took place over four days and involved 1372 swimmers.

The 2012 Skipton Swimarathon will take place in October, with full details to be announced on the Skipton Swimarathon website.

Skipton Swimarathon brief history

The Lions Club of Guernsey, Guernsey Round Table and Variety Club of Guernsey formed the first Swimarathon Organising Committee under the chairmanship of Jurat Harry Bisson in 1977.

The proceeds from the event were to be shared equally by the clubs and could only be spent locally.

Guernsey Variety Club faded some years back and Round Table and Lions Club are now the beneficiaries.

Quite often the two clubs agree to pool Swimarathon resources towards a common goal, which in years past have included Help the Aged, Guernsey Society for cancer relief, a number of Youth Clubs, Maison St. Pierre, Grow Limited, Guernsey Volunteer Service, equipment for handicapped swimmers, St. John’s Ambulance and Rescue, and The Ron Short Centre.

The Guernsey Swimarathon has gone from strength to strength and become the Island’s greatest community fund raising event. 50,000 swimmers of all ages have raised more than £1,000,000 for local needs since its inception.

In April 2010 Skipton International became the lead sponsor of the Guernsey Swimarathon, which is now known as the Skipton Swimarathon.

The 2011 Skipton Swimarathon raised over £41,000 for good causes in Guernsey, including major donations to the Young People Guernsey appeal, and the Xtremes sports park construction project at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre.

Skipton International Ltd. has a long standing reputation for community activity and is a regular contributor to Guernsey events encompassing sports, the arts and local good causes, including the Liberation Day celebrations.
