The activities of staff at RBC Wealth Management last year should help Cancer Research UK to celebrate 60 years of fundraising in Guernsey in style.

The Guernsey branch of Cancer Research UK was RBC Wealth Management’s chosen Charity of the Year in 2011 and after a busy year of fundraising activities, a donation of £14,082 is being made.

Clare Cairns, Chairperson of Cancer Research UK’s Guernsey Fundraising Committee, explained why RBC Wealth Management’s contribution was so timely.

“We are in the process of confirming totals, but all the signs indicate that our activities in Guernsey to date –that’s since 1952 – have raised the fantastic sum of £1million.”

“This recent donation from RBC Wealth Management could not have come at a better time as we celebrate 60 years of fundraising in Guernsey for Cancer Research.”

“Thanks to the staff, we think we have reached – if not exceeded – our goal of £1million. We are so grateful and enormously appreciative of everything that has been done,” she said.

Funds that are raised locally for Cancer Research UK are sent to the Head Office where they support the Medical Oncology and Research Unit in Southampton, which is used by many Guernsey patients.

Statistics provided by Cancer Research UK show that cancer will affect one third of the UK population, and with the disease affecting so many, the charity is one which the staff at RBC Wealth Management were proud to support for the second year running in 2011.

Sally Jones, RBC Wealth Management’s charity co-ordinator, said “we were thrilled to support Cancer Research again. Staff exceeded all expectations and smashed last year’s fundraising total by organising dress down days, taking part in sponsored events and selling cakes and plants.”

“Everyone got behind the cause, but we would especially like to thank the local businesses that answered our requests for support – even in this financial climate – by donating vouchers, gifts and tickets for our raffle draws. Our fantastic total is largely thanks to their assistance too.”

Cancer Research UK plans to mark its 60th anniversary in September 2012 by holding a gala dinner and jazz luncheon. More details will be made available to supporters soon.

Staff at RBC Wealth Management have already chosen the Teenage Cancer Trust as the charity that they will be supporting in 2012, and for the first time their colleagues in Jersey have decided to support their own branch of the same charity.
