RBC Wealth Management offers financial help to Guernsey charities

Finding sufficient funding can be a major challenge for smaller charities.

One Guernsey firm aims to help each year by supporting lesser known associations and projects.

“We invite registered Guernsey charities to receive grants, ranging from a few hundred to a thousand pounds,” said Alan Pearce, Chairman of RBC Wealth Management‘s Donations Fund Committee.

“We’d love to hear from Island-based charities looking for grants for 2012, especially for initiatives focusing on youth and education, amateur sport or health and wellbeing.” Continue reading

UK Climate Change Minister Greg Barker launches South West Marine Energy Park

The South West has today been named as the UK’s first Marine Energy Park, firmly placing the region on the international map for leadership in marine renewable energy.

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker made the announcement on a visit to Bristol where he met with key members of the new initiative.

The South West Marine Energy Park will stretch from Bristol through to Cornwall and as far as the Isles of Scilly. Continue reading

RG Falla begins construction on 24 energy efficient apartments for GHA

Guernsey Housing Association has signed a building contract with RG Falla for just under £4 million and work has started on the construction of 24 apartments, all for social rent, at a new clos to be called Clos Barbier off Rue Jehannet in St Martin.

This is the first Rural Area site to be developed under planning policy ‘RH2’, which is there to support new social housing in the Rural Area where it ”rounds off” existing social housing. Continue reading

Many pharmaceutical products survive sewage treatment intact

High levels of the anti-inflammatory substance diclofenac are released from wastewater plants, according to a study from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Umeå University that was commissioned by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

“This is a wake-up call that this substance and several other pharmaceuticals are so difficult to break down,” said Jan Christiansson, the officer in charge at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. Continue reading

Bloomberg New Energy Finance 2011 review of renewable energy investments

Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports that global investment in clean energy reached a new record of $260 billion in 2011, up five percent on 2010 and almost five times the total of $53.6 billion in 2004.

Investment in solar far outstripped that in wind, and perhaps of most note, US clean energy investment moved back ahead of China for the first time since 2008.

Last year also saw the one trillionth dollar invested in clean energy globally since the company started compiling data in 2004. Continue reading

Bloomberg NEF names Terra Firma top venture capital & private equity investor in clean energy for 2011

The handbooks, titled ‘Your Health and Safety’, have two versions – one for employees of the business and the other for contractors working with the business.
