Children at Amherst Primary School are sure to be seen as an extremely bright bunch during the dark days of autumn and winter after being presented by Goldridge Estate Agents with a free supply of high visibility jackets.
One hundred of the bright yellow fluorescent vests have been handed out to Amherst’s reception classes and year one pupils to ensure they will be noticed while walking to and from school throughout the coming months.

The idea to provide the jackets came from Goldridge director Kelvin Seeds after he found out about a similar community scheme in the UK. “I heard it on BBC Radio 4 and it struck me that we could do something like it to make it safer for Guernsey children to use the streets in the dark winter months,” Mr Seeds explained.
“We are a Town based agency and Amherst Primary School was a natural choice for us, partly because of its location not far from our offices and also because of the school’s position in a relatively densely populated area with a fair amount of traffic passing through.”
Amherst Primary’s head teacher, Tracey Moore, says it was a simple but brilliant idea to provide the school’s younger pupils with their own reflective jackets.
“We were delighted to have been chosen by Goldridge because our school is highly committed to keeping the children safe, not only within the school grounds but also on their way to and from school. With the clocks due to go back at the end of this month we saw this as a very timely opportunity to encourage our pupils to be seen as the days get shorter.”
Mrs Moore added that the ‘stay bright’ initiative also ties in well with the school’s health promotion policies, which include encouraging pupils to take regular exercise.
“We are a very health conscious school and one of the events we like to take part in is ‘Walk to School Week’, which usually takes place in May. We work closely with the parents and Living Streets to encourage our pupils to join in and they’re all very excited to have their bright new jackets, which they can take home with them.”
With the pupils of Amherst Primary setting such a glowing example, they can safely lay claim to being among the ‘brightest’ children in the island.
