Test driving a range-extended electric Vauxhall Ampera EREV

July 19th, 2011 by Richard Lord

Robert Llewellyn test drives a Vauxhall Ampera EREV, which will be available in the UK in early 2012.

This vehicle has an electric motor running on a lithium-ion battery, which gives the car a range of between 40 to 50 miles, and takes about four hours to charge.

This car also has an internal combustion engine, which on a full tank extends the car’s range to over 400 km.

For commuting a short distance to work or for shopping the electric motor can be used alone.

For longer distances or for taking the car to the continent or for driving in the UK, the internal combustion engine can cover the distance.

This car may solve the dilemma for people who wish to own an electric car but also wish to have a car that can take them off-island without fear that they will be stranded because they cannot find a charging point.
