Test driving a range-extended electric Vauxhall Ampera EREV

Robert Llewellyn test drives a Vauxhall Ampera EREV, which will be available in the UK in early 2012.

This vehicle has an electric motor running on a lithium-ion battery, which gives the car a range of between 40 to 50 miles, and takes about four hours to charge.

This car also has an internal combustion engine, which on a full tank extends the car’s range to over 400 km.

For commuting a short distance to work or for shopping the electric motor can be used alone.

For longer distances or for taking the car to the continent or for driving in the UK, the internal combustion engine can cover the distance.

This car may solve the dilemma for people who wish to own an electric car but also wish to have a car that can take them off-island without fear that they will be stranded because they cannot find a charging point.

This year’s walking route devised by Living Streets Guernsey Chairman Tom Le Pelley showed off the beauty of Castel parish. Participants met by the flag poles across the coastal road from La Grande Mare Hotel on beautiful Vazon bay. The blustery weather stayed dry and the strength of the wind kept most walkers cool in the intermittent sunshine.  Walkers headed inland from La Grande Mare following a gently rising narrow country lane by the side of the golf course. Unpackaged’s vision is a world with less wasteful packaging.  The shop is achieving this goal one customer at a time.

Less packaging reduces C0₂ emissions, and reduces the amount of material entering landfill or being incinerated.  Having to buy less packaging gives people the opportunity to live more sustainably.  The Unpackaged shopping concept produces less food waste because people only buy what they need.

One customer who loves Unpackaged said “if I had the courage at the supermarket till I would strip off all my packaging but I am in a hurry and I am a coward” and another said of Unpackaged “this is definitely the way forward.”
