The temporary waste recycling facility at Longue Hougue will remain open seven days a week throughout the winter months although its opening hours will change to accommodate the shorter daylight hours.

Since it opened in January 2008, more than 147,000 visitors have been recorded at the site to either drop off recyclable items or look for items to reuse. Over 5,000 vehicles per month have visited the site in 2010.

The site will continue to be open from Monday to Friday (7.30am to 4pm), but at weekends the opening hours will change to 8am to 1pm from 1st November 2010 until 31st March 2011. A list of items which will be accepted can be obtained by calling the Department’s information line on 12077 or by logging on to www.gov.gg/recycling

The Public Services Department’s Deputy Minister, Scott Ogier said the Longue House recycling site was a great success.

‘Numbers of vehicles entering the site to drop off recyclable items continue to rise and figures indicate that almost half of the people visiting Longue Hougue are just coming in to look for things to take away. People can pick up different items from bicycles to flower pots, and give a new lease of life to thousands of unwanted items that would otherwise end up in Mont Cuet. ’

He continued, ‘The items which are not scavenged such as damaged old tools and computers are stripped down and as much is recycled as possible.’

To date, more than 2,400 tonnes of material have been recycled through the Longue Hougue facility. This figure does not include items that have been scavenged for reuse.
