The 2010 Durrell – RBC Business and Sustainability Conference

August 23rd, 2010 by Francis Binney

The annual Durrell Sustainability Conference is being held this year at the Pomme D’Or Hotel in St. Helier, Jersey on 20 October beginning at 8 am and finishing at 11 am.

The keynote speaker is Matthew Thomson who runs the London Community Recycling Network (LCRN).  Mr. Thomson has become a leading expert on systems, infrastructure and markets at the top of the waste hierarchy, with a detailed practical understanding of how materials and products may be reused. He has also significant experience of local and onsite processing and is a knowledgeable advocate of both the proximity principal and of zero waste.

LCRN is a thriving network of resource enterprises, community organisations, social entrepreneurs and activists collaborating in recycling, reuse and waste prevention initiatives. REalliance CIC is the delivery partner for WRAP in their Third Sector Capacity Building work. With REalliance support, LCRN has recently secured £8M investment for an innovative partnership to deliver an integrated reuse service across London.

Mr. Thomson is on Defra’s Civil Society Advisory Board helping Defra Ministers and officials work most effectively with voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, and has advised DEFRA, WRAP, Commission for Sustainable 2012, Greater London Authority, local authorities and businesses on waste minimisation and reuse for four years. He was recently part of the expert panel on DEFRA’s Waste Prevention Evidence Review (WR1204) and was on the Technical Advisory Committee of the New Technology Demonstrator Programme. Matthew also serves on the Investment Committee for the London Waste and Recycling Board and is a non-executive director of Social Enterprise London and of Transition Town Brixton CIC.

The Conference will include presentations from a number of Jersey companies.
