RBC Wealth Management staff go car free for charity

Nikki Le Clercq arrives for work at RBC Wealth Management in Upland Road having walked from home while Peter Falla, David Dorrity and Craig Finden-Crofts bicycle to RBC Wealth Management in support of Car Free Day on the last Friday of each month.

Staff at RBC Wealth Management in Guernsey are doing their bit for the environment by leaving their cars at home and finding other ways to get to work.

In June 2009, the company challenged staff to leave their cars at home for one Friday a month in favour of walking, cycling, bus or car-sharing in support of the G-CAN car free day initiative.

For every mile saved, the company makes a contribution from its corporate donations fund to the staff’s chosen charity of the year. In 2009, the RNLI received a donation of over £500 for the 1,250 car miles saved over the six months. This year’s chosen charity is the Guernsey branch for Cancer Research UK – staff have already banked more than 600 car miles.

Francis Binney, Environmental Officer for RBC Wealth Management in the British Isles, said:

‘We are strong supporters of the G-CAN car free day and are continuing with the scheme this year. Staff have really got on board with the initiative with many surprised with just how easy it is to leave your car behind.’

Nikki Le Clercq, Personal Assistant, RBC Corporate Employee and Executive Services, is one member of staff who has committed to go car free. On the last Friday of each month, Nikki car shares, walks or catches the bus to work.

‘My husband valiantly cycles to work every day, but I’m a regular car driver and it requires some effort for me to leave my car at home,’ she said.

‘I decided to take part in this scheme because I believe there are too many cars on our roads. I wanted to do my bit for the environment and it also feels good to start the day with some exercise.’

As a further incentive for staff the company also enters participants into a monthly draw for either a £20 cycle voucher or a £20 top-up for their Ormer bus service card.
