Guernsey Slow Food Group visits Guernsey Mushroom Growers Ltd on 6 December

The Guernsey Slow Food Group will visit Wayne Billien’s Guernsey Mushroom Growers Ltd. at Les Vallees Farm, Castel (Perry’s Ref 15 F5) on 6 December 2009.

The tour will begin at 11.30 am followed by a Sunday lunch featuring mushrooms at Fleur du Jardin.

The cost of the lunch is £15 (£17 for non-members).  The visit to Guernsey Mushroom Growers Ltd. will be followed by a mushroom inspired Sunday lunch at the Fleur du Jardin.

Wayne Billien a former tomato packer realised his lifetime ambition of running his own growing business when he became owner of Guernsey Mushroom Growers in 2006. The business now produces 1,600 six-pound boxes a week, which hits 1,800 during the peak summer period. The company has virtually the entire Guernsey market for buttons, cup and field mushrooms, which are the same variety, grown to different stages. They are also the sole supplier to the CI Co-operative in both Guernsey and Jersey.

Wayne’s son, Daniel, will show us around the 10 tunnel, high-tech operation which is equipped to feed the island’s growing appetite for mushrooms. Mushroom growing is notorious for its trickiness – plenty of tinkering and tweaking goes into producing their high quality product. The ability to get mushrooms to supermarkets and wholesalers in a matter of hours without spraying chemicals gives the company a strong competitive edge.

After the tour we will reconvene at the Fleur Du Jardin Hotel where Head Chef Jamie Sankey has devised a suitably mushroom inspired Sunday Lunch menu for us. Over coffee Carl Symes, our Guernsey Slow Food Group Chairman, will outline plans for 2010.
